Most small injuries heal on their own. Some do not. When a wound does not get smaller after several weeks, when it weeps, smells or the skin around it is reddened and warm, that is a signal you should take seriously. A chronic wound almost always has a cause that lies deeper than the wound itself.
This includes the open leg, the leg ulcer, which often goes back to a vein or artery weakness. It includes the diabetic foot, where you barely feel pressure points and small injuries because of disturbed nerves. It includes wounds after an operation that do not close as they should, and pressure sores in people who lie or sit a great deal.
With you we look not only at the wound, but at the leg, the circulation, the blood sugar and your daily life. Only when we understand why the wound is not healing can we truly bring it to heal. This is exactly why we take time. In the 60 minutes of your appointment there is room to hear your story, assess the wound carefully and explain to you what we see and why.
Please come sooner rather than later. The longer a wound is open, the harder the healing becomes. You need no referral, and you do not have to wait until it gets worse.
